readings help to ensure that you're billed only for the actual amount of gas
you've used, and that your equipment is working properly. We read your meter
at approximately the same time every month except in unusual circumstances like
severe weather, bad road conditions, locked access, or unfriendly dogs. If we
cannot get access to your meter, we
calculate your bill based on the history of gas usage at your service address,
average temperatures for the billing period, and the current cost of gas.
The most recent and previous reading dates
appear in the Service Summary section of your bill. If you would like to submit
your own meter reading, you can report your meter
reading online or by phone. To submit your reading by phone, call
our automated phone system Columbia Gas DirectLink at 1-800-688-6160 and select
option 1 after the greeting, then option 4, then option 1 to enter a meter reading.
A message appears in the Service Summary Notes section of your bill telling
the date of your next scheduled meter reading.
If you have an
inside meter that we have not been able to read for several months, or if you
have a remote index, we have a shared responsibility to make sure we obtain
an actual meter reading as soon as possible. Please call us to make arrangements
for access. Also, the Gas Use History chart on your bill identifies the number
of estimated readings during the previous months, shown as white bars on the
conditions or changes in your household can affect your actual gas consumption.
If we are unable to read your meter for several months in a row, you could see
a large billing adjustment when we do get an actual reading.
Avoid the risk
of a billing adjustment or possible shut-off. Call Columbia Gas of Massachusetts DirectLink
at 1-800-688-6160 to make arrangements for our meter reader to get access to
your meter. The following options are available to prevent this situation from
occurring in the future:
Make sure an adult is home on the scheduled meter reading date
to provide access to the meter.
with a key for secure access to read the meter.
