Regular meter readings help to ensure that you're billed only for the actual amount of gas you've used, and that your equipment is working properly. We read your meter at approximately the same time every month. If we cannot get access to your meter, we calculate your bill based on the history of gas usage at your service address, average temperatures for the billing period, and the current cost of gas.
The most recent and previous reading dates appear in the Service Summary section of your bill. During the months when we do not read your meter, you can log in to your account to report your meter reading online, or submit it by phone. To submit your reading by phone, call our dedicated automated phone system for meter readings at 1-800-837-3721. A message appears in the Service Summary Notes section of your bill telling when to call, and the PSID number you will need to enter into the system if it does not recognize your home telephone number. You can also call Columbia DirectLink at 1-800-432-9345 and select option 4 after the greeting, then select option 2 to enter a meter reading.
If you have an inside meter that we have not been able to read for several months, or if you have a remote index, we have a shared responsibility to make sure we obtain an actual meter reading at least once a year even if you report your own reading. A message will appear under Service Summary Notes on your bill reminding you that we have been unable to read your meter, and encouraging you to call us to make arrangements. Also, the Gas Use History chart on your bill identifies the number of estimated readings during the previous months, shown as white bars on the graph.
Unexpected weather conditions or changes in your household can affect your actual gas consumption. If we are unable to read your meter for several months in a row, you could see a large billing adjustment when we do get an actual reading.
Avoid the risk of a billing adjustment or possible shut-off. Call Columbia DirectLink at 1-800-432-9345 to make arrangements for our meter reader to get access to your meter. The following options are available to prevent this situation from occurring in the future:
Make sure an adult is home on the scheduled meter reading date to provide access to the meter.
Provide us with a key for secure access to read the meter.
